Max did his best to calm down once they returned to the ranch. He’d let Lucy and Savannah carry the prizes into the house, unhitched the team, then saddled his horse and went in search of his father.
“Stupid bucket,” he muttered as he rode across the prairie. How could he embarrass himself like that? It was bad enough he’d had to put up with Anson and Jess and Asher eyeing Lucy like she was a piece of candy … okay, so it wasn’t like that. They were all nice young men, but couldn’t they see that Lucy was with him?
Or could they?
Hmm, what was he doing to let everyone know that she was? Nothing, really. Most folks found out he was sweet on her when he returned from Nowhere three winters ago. But at the time Uncle Colin and Aunt Belle had a house guest his cousin Jefferson was smitten with (and ended up marrying). Max remembered how Jeff and Lorelei would gaze into each other’s eyes for long periods, like they were having some sort of conversation that no one else was privy to. He was jealous then, and wanted to share the same experience with Lucy. But he never could.
And the way things were going, he never would. He had to get hold of himself or she might never want to see him again.
He spotted his father and Logan in the distance – and Owen with them. Great. He didn’t want to talk to his father with Owen around. He kicked his horse into a canter and headed over, noting a few other ranch hands driving the herd to a different part of the ranch to graze.
His father saw him coming and rode to meet him. “Well, you’re back early. Something amiss?”
Max reined in his horse. “No, Father. Nothing’s wrong.”
Father clearly didn’t believe him for a second. “Then why the long face?”
Max sighed. “I’m an idiot.”
Father laughed. “Well, at least you admit it. Now tell me what you did to warrant such a title.”
He looked his father in the eye. “I’m… jealous. And I don’t know what to do about it.”
Father leaned back in the saddle and shoved his hat off his forehead. “Ohhhh, I see. Dare I ask whom you’re jealous of?”
“Everyone.”
His father’s eyes widened. “I beg your pardon?”
“You heard me. Everyone.” He nodded at the others. “Including Owen over there.”
Father turned in the saddle and watched Logan speaking with his son. “I see. And might I inquire as to the nature of this newfound jealousy?”
He rolled his eyes. “You know why. Lucy.”
“And what has she done to bring all this about? Other than being a stunning young woman?”
Max took a sudden interest in the sky. “Er … well, nothing, really.”
“Well, that happens, son. And, I must admit, women …” He shook his head and chuckled. “… they choose us, ultimately. All we can do is hope we’re selected.”
“But that’s not how it was with you and Mother, was it?” His parents had a very romantic story – everyone in town knew it.
